چکیده

This paper describes the performance of CMOD5, a new C-band geophysical model function, relating scatterometer backscatter to surface vector wind information over the global oceans. It was derived on the basis of a comparison of scatterometer triplets from the Active Microwave Instrument (AMI) aboard the ERS-2 satellite with collocated ECMWF first-guess winds. In addition, results from recent aircraft campaigns at hurricane wind conditions, were taken into account. CMOD5 resolves deficiencies, known to exist for CMOD4; the GMF on which the AMI wind product is based since 1993. It gives rise to a more uniform performance across the AMI swath. Improvements are especially obtained for extreme cases, for which it is shown that the dynamical range for C-band scatterometer data can be extended from 24 m s−1 to 35 m s−1 .

Comparison of Geophysical Model Functions for SAR Wind Speed Retrieval in Japanese Coastal Waters

This work discusses the accuracies of geophysical model functions (GMFs) for retrieval of sea surface wind speed from satellite-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images in Japanese coastal waters characterized by short fetches and variable atmospheric stability conditions. In situ observations from two validation sites, Hiratsuka and Shirahama, are used for comparison of the retrieved sea su...

An Improved CPW-Fed Printed UWB Antenna With Controllable Band-notched Functions

A newly designed printed slot antenna is presented that incorporates variable two band-notched functions for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. The two band notches of this coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed antenna are achieved by an M-shaped slot (MSS) embedded in the radiating element and a C-shaped strip (CSS) close to ground plane, therefore two very narrow rejected properties in the wireless lo...

Asar Wave Mode First Geophysical Results

Some geophysical calibration results on the level 1 ASAR WVI products are presented in the continuity of the investigations performed on the ERS1/2 SAR Wave Mode products. Investigations have been focussed on comparisons with co-located ECMWF winds. In particular, a calibration constant is tentatively derived using CMOD-IFREMER model function. Following standard azimuthal resolution losses over...

High Resolution Ocean Surface Wind Fields Retrieved from Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radars Operating at C-band

This paper introduces algorithms designed to retrieve high-resolution ocean surface wind fields from satellite borne synthetic aperture radars (SARs) operating in C-band at either vertical (VV) or horizontal (HH) polarization in transmit and receive. Wind directions are extracted from wind induced streaks that are visible in SAR images at scales above 200 m and that are approximately in line wi...

SAR-Based Wind Resource Statistics in the Baltic Sea

Ocean winds in the Baltic Sea are expected to power many wind farms in the coming years. This study examines satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from Envisat ASAR for mapping wind resources with high spatial resolution. Around 900 collocated pairs of wind speed from SAR wind maps and from 10 meteorological masts, established specifically for wind energy in the study area, are compar...
